The Islesboro Elementary School on Little Cranberry Island, off Bar Harbor, Maine, asked Susan Barrett Merrill for an EarthLoom to celebrate their friendship gathering of five schools off the coast of Maine, from Monhegan Island and Matinicus Island in the mid-coast area to Swan’s Island and Frenchboro off of Mount Desert Island. We sent the plans, and they built a loom for the Islesford School’s front play area.

Five Maine islands

The purpose of the gathering was to foster friendship between the islands and their school children. Everyone brought materials from their island to weave into the Friendship Weaving. They got to know each other, and continue to stay in touch. Sparked by their EarthLoom Friendship Weaving, the schools decided to form a common island curriculum and share classes online. They passed the Friendship Weaving from island to island, each proudly displaying it in their school for everyone to see.
